China’s real estate boom is creating billionaires

While the US struggles with a housing slump and the subprime mortgage crisis, investors in Chinese real estate are celebrating and pushing the value of housing and housing shares to spectacular heights. Despite government efforts to curb real estate speculation in China, housing prices continue to rise, fueling even more construction, and also a frenzy of initial public stock offerings by big real estate companies.

Land shortage hits Switzerland housing market

Vaud Switzerland has a problem. The area doesn’t have enough available property for future residential construction, a bank report says.

Land owners aren’t interested in selling. A new market study reveals that 80 percent of land owners in Vaud are uninterested in selling their properties to allow for the construction of new housing. The report, conducted by the cantonal bank BCV, contradicts findings from the Vaud government, which conclude that only 20 percent of land owners are unwilling to sell.

UK housing market may crash like the US

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that there is evidence of the UK and other European countries showing similar trends to those seen ahead of the US crash.

One of the biggest similarities is the price boom seen in the last decade, which saw prices inflate well above incomes. "There remains the concern that the US experience might presage steep housing downturns in other countries that have also experienced a rapid rise in house prices, with associated risks for output growth," said the IMF.

Jamaica real estate market is hot

According to data released by the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), $7.313 billion in new mortgages were booked in 2004 and increased by 42 per cent to $10.378 billion by 2006. While the actual number of mortgages for 2006 have not been released as yet, the trend points to only moderate increases in this category over the past few years - some 3,500 mortgages were granted in 2004 and just short of 4,000 new mortgages were granted in 2005.
