Council of Mortgage Lenders has warned that up to 170,000 people are expected to struggle with their mortgage payments next year and 45,000 homes are expected to be repossessed as increases in interest rates hit those whose fixed-rate mortgage agreements are coming to an end.

Winnipeg Canada housing sales break another record

WinnipegREALTORS reported this past month was the best September on record, with 1,060 homes selling for a total of $177.1 million through the industry's multiple listing service. The sale numbers were up 2 percent over the previous September, while the dollar volume jumped 15 per cent.

Through the end of September 10,503 homes were sold, nearly seven percent more than in the first nine months of 2006. Plus, the dollar value of home sales through Sept. 30 was $1.78 billion, up nearly 20 per cent over last year.

Land shortage hits Switzerland housing market

Vaud Switzerland has a problem. The area doesn’t have enough available property for future residential construction, a bank report says.

Land owners aren’t interested in selling. A new market study reveals that 80 percent of land owners in Vaud are uninterested in selling their properties to allow for the construction of new housing. The report, conducted by the cantonal bank BCV, contradicts findings from the Vaud government, which conclude that only 20 percent of land owners are unwilling to sell.

UK housing market may crash like the US

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that there is evidence of the UK and other European countries showing similar trends to those seen ahead of the US crash.

One of the biggest similarities is the price boom seen in the last decade, which saw prices inflate well above incomes. "There remains the concern that the US experience might presage steep housing downturns in other countries that have also experienced a rapid rise in house prices, with associated risks for output growth," said the IMF.

Jamaica real estate market is hot

According to data released by the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), $7.313 billion in new mortgages were booked in 2004 and increased by 42 per cent to $10.378 billion by 2006. While the actual number of mortgages for 2006 have not been released as yet, the trend points to only moderate increases in this category over the past few years - some 3,500 mortgages were granted in 2004 and just short of 4,000 new mortgages were granted in 2005.
